This year for swimming we where back at the brand new Makino because last year we where at Freyberg. I like Makino way better then Freyberg the instructors are way nicer. This year so far I have just been developing my technique in my diving and strokes so that they are easier to do which makes me faster.
Driving closer and closer the giant snow covered mountain, I start to feel millions of butterflies flutter into my stomach. Then with a giant rush of excitement they banish into thin air. I have been waiting for this day to come and now that it's here and it feels unreal.
My skiing goals for this year is:-
To be confident skiing when I go down by myself.
To keep practising my parallel skiing and take it slowly instead of going really fast.
To go down from the top of the mountain and stay confident.
I will hopefully be able to do all those things by the end of the ski trip.
When I was skiing with Blair he taught me to lean forwards to the bottom of the hill when you want to go slower and lean back when you want to go faster and when turning lift your back leg up and it makes it easier.
Sam Strahan
Friday the 8th of April was the Manawatu Sam Strahan Rippa Rugby Competition for schools with under 100 students. We, Northern Oroua, had some pretty tough competition with teams from Waituna West, Linton Camp, Kiwitea, Rongotea, Colyton, Longburn and Bainesse. Last year we won the cup so we were ready to win again. A quick run around the field and some passes. We were ready for our first game against Rongotea Tigers. Our starting team was Lochy, Liam, Remy,Dylan, Brooke, Le-Arna and Oliva and our subs were Hunter, Bonnie and Charlotte.after two more games and were pleased to make the Quarter final then the semifinal. But the last game against Colyton This was a nail biting game this meant it was a tough one. Each time they scored a try we tryed to score one in returned with a try. At full time we lost 4-9. It was a great day. Thank you to the Turbos for organising it! - By Brooke

Swimming sports
For swimming sports practice this year I did swimming everyday at school and swim club on Saturday. This kept me swim fit for swimming sports.
Overall I came 3rd
My Triathlon Learning Story
I woke up to the blinding sun beaming in through my curtains. I stumbled out of bed and dragged myself down the stairs, almost tripping over my feet in every step. I was tossing and turning all night worrying about today … All my training has to pay off. Jumping off the bus I felt pumped and excited. I put my goggles on my bike and slowly walk it out place my helmet beside it. I stop and think, “Have I got everything?” but as I look around an enormous parade of people come marching down into our school. It finally came to my race. Standing on the start line the sound of the bricks clapping together nearly made me jump out of my skin. My goal for the run was to keep up with the people in front, then pass them in the bike. Running my first lap with a painful stitch, I was huffing and puffing trying to keep up with the person in front of me. Coming up to the bike, I whipped on my helmet, and off I went passing the person in front of me. As turn to go up to Makoura road Lance yells out, “Go Brooke go!” So I keep going up to the road cone that my dad is marshalling at. When I finally get up the hill and to where my dad is, he said to go as fast as I can down the hill to get some distance on the others. So I did. The cold air on my face was wonderful! When you are so hot you are almost a cooked chicken. Coming into the swim, Molly had passed me just at the end of the bike ride, so I was enger to pass her. Sliding into the pool and cooling off in the freezing cold water I pass her on the fourth length. Climbing out of the pool, I jog to the finish line. But then Molly gets out of the pool, sprints to the finish line and starts to catch me. I see her out of the corner of my eye ... but then I go over the line.
My triathlon Goals Running: to keep going for the run even when I want to stop and to lift up my knees and take longer strides
Biking:to use my gears and be quick in the changes and dig deep and keep going

Athletics Finally we arrive at Timona Park. I am pumped and ready to go. The first thing we did was long jump I did pretty well but could of done better. I got a 5. Then we did discus got a five and came 3rd. Then we did high jump which I didn't do too well at; got a 1. Then we did hurdles. I did well at hurdles; came 3rd. Then we did shot put. At shot put I got a 3 and then we did sprints (got a 3) and then we did long distance running and I came 3rd as well Then we did the relays. 8-9 year olds came 1st, 10-11 year olds came 4th, 12+ came 1st and the flying squad relay came 1st.
Mountain biking at Santoft
The first track we went on was the Mites track. It had sharp corners and little hills, lots of pine cones and tree roots. At one stage I went down a steep hill and did a sharp turn but turned too much and crashed into a tree. My bike tipped over and then I slid across the ground. When Hannah biked past me she thought that I was dead but I wasn't. I was just lying there in pain so she helped me up and I got back on my bike. After everyone finished the Mites track, Phil took us on the next level up. I found this one challenging and would definitely like to take my family back here.I had a great time.
Skiing
My goals for this year
My skiing goals for this year is to be confident skiing.
To learn how to parallel ski.
To go down from the top of the mountain and the giant.
I will hope fully be able to do all those things by the end of the ski trip
The car ride was long and slow but actually before we knew it we were driving up the mountain. Every year I always forget how long the trip is because I am always filled up with so much excitement that the time flies. The mountain sparkled and the weather was divine with not a cloud in the sky. As Mrs Fielder's car slowly chugged up the mountain I was pumped and ready to go I could not wait. As we drive up to the car park it was deserted. We where the first people there.
Our lesson: Donna was our teacher. She was great. She played all these different games with us like the juice game when you squeeze the outside leg outwards to make your favorite juice. In the hula hoop game first pick a favorite color and it is the color of your hula hoop and as you go to turn lean belly button over side of the hula-hoop the way you want to turn. The tail game practised turning your heel out as well as your toes so it is easier to turn and ski parallel. The sponge game practised squeezing ankles together to make it easier to turn parallel. I ate my lunch and then Hannah and Tyler approached me. "We are going to the top. Could you please come with us." "Umm sure I guess so," I said.
Going down from the top: The feeling of leather seats behind my back felt soooo good and the footrest to put my skis on was great because on the other chair lifts they are metal which hurts your back and having your skis dangling pulls your ankles out of their sockets It was faster and it was luxury on the chair lift to the top of the mountain. I felt so professional when we hopped off. Me and Hannah had never done it before but Tyler had. So me and Hannah were worried but Tyler seemed to know where he was going. Down to the big bowl we went and it was exactly what it was named ... it was a big bowl. I got really worried but then I remembered that this is where I can use my parallel skiing and it worked. I went slow and steady down the big bowl at one point Hannah fell over which made Tyler fall over.It was so funny and since I turned around to look at them I nearly fell over too. After we skied the big bowl we came to the Giant and went down Upper Freeway and after Upper Freeway was Movenpick and after Movenpick was Parklane.
Cross Country As I stood over the start line my heart was pumping. I was ready to run this race but my stomach was filled with so many butterflies I nearly flew away to the clouds. But then along came the guy who starts the race and he asked us if we were ready and we all agreed to say yes.
I thought to myself, “This is it Brooke. You have been training for this and now is your time to shine like the stars." READY SET GO!!!!!!! I started off at a good pace trying not to waste my energy because I had a long way to go. Over the stones I was coming 4th. Then jumped over a fence and then I ran down a bank to the creeks. I passed two girls at the creek because they tried to jump over it but I just ran through but the girl who was beating me was just in front.
I finally got to the junction. It was full of creeks and trees and dead sheep. I did not know where to go so I followed the girl in front of me. We kept running for a while around corners and through creeks. But then right in front of me was my worst nightmare ... Big Hill Bob. Every year the 11 to 13 year olds have to run up Bob. He is so big when you run up the top all the people are little dots and on the way back down, once you start running, you can not stop because if you stop moving your legs you might fall over.
So I powered it down Bob. He gave a smile as I went down. As I got to the swamp I took a step, sinking into the muck and mud. My legs where stuck. I pulled them out then carried on to the stones. My legs were jelly. I had been running for so long but I was mega close to the finish line. Around this corner it was. I ran as fast as my legs could go but I they couldn't catch the girl in front of me.
As I leapt over the finish line I could hear everyone yell my name!
“GO BROOKE!!” they said.
I achieve my goal I came 1ST!!!
My goal for the triathlon this year is to come in the top three.
To achieve my goal I have practiced lots and will go hard on the day to achieve my goal.
I am especially proud of my biking because i am using my granny's road bike and i go really fast on it.
The part i have found the most challenging is the running because over the holidays I didn't do much running so i had to build up my fitness again.
Tomorrow i am most looking forward to is when i came off the bike and i am all sweaty and then jump into the nice cold pool

SWIMMING
FOR SWIMMING THIS YEAR I HAVE LEARNT TO SWIM IN CLOTHES AND DIVE PROPERLY.
MY STRENGTHS ARE FREESTYLE, BACKSTROKE AND BREASTSTROKE AND NOT SO MUCH BUTTERFLY.
I HAVE DEVELOPED MY BACK STROKE TECHNIQUE MORE THIS YEAR.
My Makino report Brooke is an awesome swimmer who does everything asked of her to a high standard. She has taken everything on board that I have said and continues to work towards better strokes. Awesome work Brooke!
My goal is to come in the top three for the oroua triathalon I have been practicing lots and lots
As the sun was beaming down on to the school I sit at the start line waiting for my raCE
As I sat slowly my stomach filled up with butterflys and any second I was going to fly away
Ready year 6 girls hop on the start line ready set bang my heart pounded as I sprinted off the line like a cheetah striking it prey
As I ran to the bike trantoinsn chiked on my helmet and zoomed off MY LEGS EXZELRERATEED

Swimming Reflection
This year my goal was to train lots and come in the top 3.
I got better at keeping my legs together in butterfly and staying straight in backstroke.
I am proud of my breaststroke because it is my best stroke and my fave stroke as well.
overall I came 3rd I was very proud and I did this by practicing lots and lots
2013
Swimming 2013
For swimming this year I have learnt that if keep your head still when doing free style you go fast and if you stretch your arms out you also go fast. So if you put them together ... you go really fast!
I have achieved at Breathe advance. This includes improving my technique in all my strokes, tumble turns, speed and endurance work and clothed survival.
My Makino Swimming Coach said, "Brooke has beautiful technique in all her strokes and knows how to move easily between speeds when asked. She has completed numerous 200m medleys this term and has no trouble completing longer distances. Well done Brooke!"
Triathlon reflection
My legs changed in fast mode as I ran to the bikes. "GO BROOKE GO!" screamed Yvonne. I ran onto the road with my bike and I pedaled as fast as I could to the police car. I turned around. I went zooming down the hill until I saw the slow down sign. I hit the brakes. "Hop off your bike. Take your shoes and goggles off. Go into the pool. I'm here," said Zahn. Walking past I screamed, "Ok." I jumped in the pool and swam as fast as I could and did 4 lengths, jumped out and sprinted to the finish line. I ended up coming 5th. I was proud of that.
Swimming This year I enjoyed kayaking and snorkeling. I loved jumping off the diving board. I didn't like the squad training so much because it was hard. On swimming sports day I couldn't even move because I was so tired. Before the sports I had something on every day! I got better at my butterfly and my freestyle cause I glide my arms longer so I go faster. When Mrs Fielder told me to keep my legs together in butterfly I went way faster. I learnt how to do the special starts for a length of backstroke, freestyle and butterfly. My goal for next year is to come in the top 3 for swimming sports.

2012 Swimming Brooke that is the end for lollies. It's lesson time. What we only just went to play. It is because you bought some lollies. Ok ... get your life jackets because it is time to go out side. Everyone has to hold on to their life jackets and step into the pool. Hannah ... Charlotte ... Huntah ... I want you guys to go first ok. Ready! Go! Brooke you don't have to hold onto anything because you don't have a life jacket on. Ready. Jump! I stepped into the pool and as I went down I swallowed a big mouth fall of water. I learnt a trick to using less arms you roll your arms and you will go further. In survival I learnt how to go into a circle, I enjoyed jumping off the diving board.
My Makino Report
Brooke is a hard little worker and has really enjoyed the challenge this term. She has worked hard on increasing swimming endurance and improving her technique in ll four strokes. By improving her body rotation and lengthening out her arms Brooke can now cover a much greater distance per stroke in freestyle. Well done Brooke!!
Skiing
At last we are at Mt Ruapehu.
Tania, do you want me to go with Danni.
Yes please.
Danni we have to go this way to the ski race ok.
Mum I am going to the learners slope and I want to practice my turning ok.
Ok.
Brooke our lesson is about to start.
And you need to go and get a vest.
Ok.
So we headed up to Park lane for our lesson.
We had Marssel as our teacher.
Marssel calls me girl friend.
Today we will learn to turn but first we are going to go up the pommel. I will go last so wait for me at the top ... ok.
Does anyone know how to turn.
No. Ok so if you want to turn right, you lean on your left leg. So that's how you turn right.
And if you want to turn left you lean on your right leg.
Two hours later ... thank you for teaching us ... that is ok.
Brooke do you want to go down park lane with me.
Ok I'll just eat my lunch.
Ok.
Mum ... me and Charlotte are going down Park lane.
Can I came?
Ok but don't go too fast.
Ok.
Charlotte ... my mum is coming.
Ok let's go!
THE END Hockey
Thank you for coaching us. I learnt to hold the stick properly and where the positions are and to hold the stick low for control. For example, if someone was going to push the ball to you, it would take all day to get your stick down. At training I liked doing the shuttle sprints because they will make me fit. I think our team work was good because we called to each other. I enjoyed doing hockey as it was fun. Next time I want to win again.
Cross country
Mum I've got butterflies! I think that I am going to fly away when I start running. I am more nervous than going to the dentist.
While I walk the track I'm looking for the creek and fences we have to get over.
8 year old boys and girls can come up to the start line announced Mr. Richardson. Molly, I am nervous, are you? Yes I am nervous too.
Ready, set, bang! Run Brooke run, I said to myself as my heart pounded. I am coming second but then Molly comes up behind me, so I might not come second. I can still pass her.
We are at the stones and I know she will slow down because she has bare feet. I don't want her to pass me again so I speed up a little.
Now I have to jump a fence and here comes the first of 4 creeks! I have to jump over the creeks to the other side.
One more fence to jump over! OK climb. That was fast.
Molly is coming up behind me again! I am coming ??? and that is good. Stones again! Yipee, that should slow her down so I can pass her.
But she is a long way ahead still. Brooke Brooke the girl in front of you has bare feet so you can pass her. I speed up again.
Grass. I am going to sprint now!
I come third and my throat's ok.
I feel very proud of myself for coming 3rd. Now I can go to the Movies to see the Marigold Hotel. I am so happy that I don't have to do it for a whole year!.
Cross country training This year for cross country I was focusing on having a long stride and my technique and then I practiced and practiced and I got better. My goal for Friday is to keep on going and not stop and to come 2nd.
The triathlon.
"When are the Gillespie’s coming to pick me up?" I asked Dad. "Soon," said Dad as he went out the back door. The bus pulled up at the end of the driveway. "Put on your shoes Johnny!" I yelled. "Ok ok I am coming Brooke. I can see the Gillespies. It is time to go." "Hi Charlotte and Tessa."
We arrived in Rangiwahia. I was feeling nervous and jumpy. The Rangiwahia teacher walked over to me, gave me a present and said it was for Hunter and I. We opened our wrapping and found a box of chocolates! Yahoo I was so happy.
Mr Richardson told theYear 4 boys and girls how many laps they had for each event. Ready, set, go! I took off! Oh no, I have butterflies. "Don’t stop running Brooke," I said to myself.
I was coming 6th but then I passed 2 people on my bike. I pedalled up hill then raced downhill to the pool.
Hannah was my manager but she wasn’t there so Tessa took over.
My swim was 4 lengths. Then I ran down beside Tessa to the finish line. I was 4th.

Cross Country When I got to Waituna West for the Cross Country I walked over to the people for the trial walk .When we got to the rivers my Dad carried me over the rivers but only on the walk not on the race. My race was first so I got ready for my race but when the man said " can the seven year olds go to the start line". It had started hailing . I went to the Start line . The gun went off for the boys. I got in line and when the gun went off again all the girls started running. It was scary because I hate hail and it was hailing really hard. When it hit my face it stung and some even went into my ear. Daddy was running with me so I didn’t get lost. Unfortunately when I ran through the trees, I slipped on the mud and slid down the hill on my bottom. I jumped up and ran across the field . Then it started hailing harder than before. At the next river I walked down the hill to get to it. it was a tough cross country.
Triathlon I thought the triathlon was fun and it is good for your body. It makes you get fit. I was really proud of my swimming because I practice it more than biking and running so I find it easier. I was racing against year 4's so next year I will race against people the same age as me. My next step is to get better at the biking. I will bike up to our wool shed at Table Flat and back. I could drop my bike at the cattle stop and run to the Dearloves house and back. It will help me with my biking and running.
Swimming At Makino pool in the swimming sports I ...
2010 Term 4 Oroua Athletic Sports I won a 5 in the 50m and the 75m sprint, and the distance race. I was 4th in the ball push with 6,70m. I won 3's for long jump, quoits and high jump.
Term 3 I am training for the cross country.
I liked the swimming sports. I swam in the senior swimming sports.
Goal for swimming To practice my breathing in freestyle swimming.
Swimming Comments:
Brooke tried really hard and completed all the freestyle drills. She can swim 10 metres backstroke.
Goal
To get fit in daily fitness.
Goal for athletics
I would like to work on improving sprinting and distance running.

Swimming 2013
For swimming this year I have learnt that if keep your head still when doing free style you go fast and if you stretch your arms out you also go fast. So if you put them together ... you go really fast!I have achieved at Breathe advance.
My legs changed in fast mode as I ran to the bikes."GO BROOKE GO!" screamed Yvonne.
Walking past I screamed, "Ok."
I jumped in the pool and swam as fast as I could and did 4 lengths, jumped out and sprinted to the finish line.
I ended up coming 5th. I was proud of that.
This year I enjoyed kayaking and snorkeling.

Brooke that is the end for lollies.
THE ENDHockey
This year for cross country I was focusing on having a long stride and my technique and then I practiced and practiced and I got better.
My goal for Friday is to keep on going and not stop and to come 2nd.
It is time to go."
"Hi Charlotte and Tessa."
I was 4th.
The Oroua Swimming Sports
When I got to Waituna West for the Cross Country I walked over to the people for the trial walk .When we got to the rivers my Dad carried me over the rivers but only on the walk not on the race.
Triathlon
I thought the triathlon was fun and it is good for your body.
